Thaandavam Movie Review

Actor Vikram’s latest release “Thaandavam” had its more than fair share of controversy prior to its release. The main point of contention was that the story and script was copied from an assistant director  who had once submitted the detailed script to UTV and later when he came to know about the news that “Thaandavam” has more similarities to his script, he decided to seek justice but of no avail. The latest news is that on the date of release, director Ameer had submitted his resignation from the director’s union as a protest to support the cause of the assistant director.

The film on the whole isn’t too great to be point blank. The story is about Shivakumar (Vikram) a RAW officer traveling to London to handle a case that could have national impact. Once in London, things start to take an unexpected turn and life turns upside down for Shiva. What happened in London to Shiva and how did it affect him and what does he do to those who were responsible for the massacre is all about in this film which has a running time of 165 minutes.

Most of the film’s main storyline runs in flashback mode where Meenakshi (Anushka) an eye doctor gets married to Shiva and how their life pans out till the London fiasco takes place. In the present day, there is Sara (Amy Jackson) who wins Miss London title and is bowled over by Shiva and falls for him. There is also Shiva’s best friend Sharath (Jagapathi Babu) who turns out to be a game changer.

Does Shiva get his revenge on the bad guys and what happens to the love affair with Sara is all about in this “Thaandavam”. The story on the whole has lot of scope in it but the screenplay is badly constructed for a story of this nature. The first half which runs for 80 minutes is a boring episode and there looks like there is no story there. The second half which runs for 85 minutes does show that there is some story but even that fails to interest the viewer.

In terms of acting, none of the actors including Vikram has done a great job and to be precise, It’s just plain vanilla acting and nothing worthy of mention. The supporting cast includes Lakshmi Rai, M S Bhaskar, Saranya, Nasser and others. Santhanam as usual plays a comedy cameo. Music by G V Prakash looks good in few songs but apart from that it falls flat.

Director A L Vijay should have taken more care in this “Thaandavam” but looks like he was little careless and probably had too much belief in the star status the film carries .

After “Rajapattai”, “Thaandavam” is also in line to bite the dust at the box-office.

“Thaandavam” can be given a miss at the theatres.

Provided they had recognized the work of the assistant director, who had written this script, he might have worked with them and the film might have come out well!!
