“Sura” is a landmark film for Vijay, considering it was the 50th film of his career. Not many actors would have the honor of completing a golden jubilee as the lead actor in as many films. A rare honor but in the end it was all messed up and thanks to the improper story selection from the actor. Fans expected something meaningful from this movie were disappointed and his slump in form seems to haunt him irrespective of the film even being an important milestone in his career. The film is a complete masala fare but even the die-hard fans of Ilayathalapathi will want to forget this “Sura” and move forward. The movie is way too lengthy (running time close to 3 hours) and the story nor screenplay creates any impact in terms of any yardstick that one could measure with.

The storyline is quite simple and has been seen numerous times before in Tamil cinema. Sura (Vijay) is a fisherman who lives in a fishing hamlet with his mother. The area minister Samuthrarajan (Debutant Devgill) is a smuggler and at the same time has an eye over the land in which the fishing hamlet exists. Samuthrarajan in his attempt to vacate the fisher folk from the hamlet comes across Sura leading to a cat and mouse chase throughout.

Poornima (Tamannah) plays the love interest of Sura and her role in the movie is quite short as she appears out of nowhere trying to commit suicide and gets saved by Sura. She falls in love with him and after that she disappears only to come in  for some song sequences providing the much needed oomph factor for the movie. Vadivelu in the character of Umbrella tries hard to maintain the comedy track but unfortunately he doesn’t succeed much in that.

Vijay’s acting is absolutely average whereas the new villain in the block Devgill looks unconvincing with his emotions. In fact, Devgill looks to imitate Ashish Vidyarthi in his actions and to make matters worse his make-up further strengthens that thought amongst the viewers. Tamannah looks to have made up her mind and has started to provide more glamour than seen before.

Music is scored by Mani Sharma and the songs are meant to target only die-hard Vijay fans. Don Max who happens to be the man in the editing table should have cropped many unwanted scenes from the movie. Director S P Rajkumar fails squarely as the story nor the ideas that has been displayed in the movie makes an impact and at the same time it also gives a feel that it has been copied from various flicks seen before.

After the poor showing of “Vettaikaran” in Box-office “Sura” was expected to do brisk business but as things stand “Sura” looks like it will have a brisk exit from the theatres soon. Sun Pictures will be mulling over their decision of distributing this film.
