Singam Movie Review
A movie that created a lot of hype has lived truly up to its expectations. The movie is a cop story but the silver line in this film is the treatment given to an ordinary storyline and full credit to director Hari for the same. The pace of the movie is on full throttle right from the introduction fight of Surya till the end credits roll-over. Both Hari and Surya were under tremendous pressure to deliver a racy entertainer as their previous cop movies in “Saamy” and “Kaakha Kaakha” were absolute entertainers. Incidentally Singam (Lion) is Surya’s 25th film and to be honest he has selected an apt story under a talented director for his landmark film.
Thuraisingam (Surya) is a sub-inspector in a small town Nallur located in Tuticorin district where he is respected and loved by the people immensely. In Chennai Mayilvaganam (Prakash Raj) is a goon who commits all crimes right from extortion to kidnapping. Mayilvaganam gets entangled in a case and is let on conditional bail that he needs to sign in a police station where Thuraisingam is the sub-inspector. When Mayilvaganam doesn’t appear and sends a proxy to sign things take a twist and the first spark between the two flares.
Kavya (Anushka) comes to the village to spend time with her grandparents and its love at first sight for her with Thuraisingam. Head constable Erimalai (Vivek) provides the necessary laughter and its a rarity these days to see a comedy track in sync with the story which is again missing in this film.
Thuraisingam gets transferred to Chennai by virtue of a promotion and he is confronted again by Mayilvaganam where the movie shifts to top gear and after that its even more racier and to be honest there is hardly a moment one feels bored during the entire movie. Though the ending is a foregone conclusion that the hero always wins but again the sequence of events leading to climax are really logical and entertaining.
The director during the pre-release interviews had mentioned that he had taken enough care that there wouldn’t be any resemblance to his previous cop flick “Saamy”and he has kept up his word to perfection. Music by Devi Sri Prasad fits the bill perfectly.
In terms of acting there is lot of difference between the Anbuselvan we saw in “Kaakha Kaakha” to the Thuraisingam in this movie. Its a refreshing change to see the heroine getting a substantial role in a hero-centric subject as most movies of this genre would have the heroines just for the glamour quotient and to appear in a few songs. Anushka after a stellar performance in “Arundhati” and as a suave girl in “Vettaikaran” has given a commendable performance in this movie and not to forget that the glamour she provides in skimpy costumes is indeed a treat for the front-benchers.
There are a plethora of actors who don the supporting role characters from Radha Ravi, Nizhalgal Ravi, Nasser and Manorama to name a few who are in perfect sync with their roles. Director Hari after a dud in “Seval” has fired with all guns blazing in this movie which is his 10th film. The movie which has a running time of over 2hrs and 30mins is a racy entertainment treat to the viewers and is sure to strike gold at the box-office.
“Singam” roars with good effect.
