Samar Movie Review
Films with a different theme / storyline are always welcomed with great success. However, the difference in the storyline needs to make sense to the ordinary viewer and that’s when a film will make a mark for itself at the Box-office which is the ultimate crown for any commercial film. Actor Vishal’s latest film “Samar” is undoubtedly a different film compared to its masala peers but the difference in the storyline is something which will not be accepted by the audience at large.
The film begins in the scenic forests of Masinagudi where Vishal is a nature lover and trekking guide. He is in love with Sunaina but is more inclined towards nature which leads to him not giving importance to his lady love. When things go beyond acceptance for Sunaina, she calls it quits and walks out of his life to settle in Bangkok.
Few months later, Vishal gets an invite from Sunaina to meet her in Bangkok as she is unable to forget him and move on. Vishal then packs his bags to Bangkok and enroute meets Trisha in the airport. On the way to Bangkok, they become good friends and helps Vishal in getting his lady love something really good.
The story takes a different twist from now on where Sunaina fails to meet him and suddenly too many things happen in his life. Unable to figure out what’s happening around him, he is taken for a royal ride before things go beyond control. What happens to Vishal and why do few things happen around him? This is all about in “Samar” which has a running time of 145 minutes.
The difference in this film is that except for a few wild guesses, nothing is predictable. The Villains in J D Chakravarthy and Manoj Bajpai get introduced only during the Interval block is something different in Tamil cinema. In the end, the reason as to why they play around with Vishal’s life is something very amateurish but that suspense is not revealed till the end of the film. The climax is again different but in a hero centric film such an ending is expected.
In terms of acting, Vishal, Trisha, J D Chakravarthy and Manoj Bajpai have done a decent job. Trisha looks old and jaded in the film while Sunaina looks pretty. The other cast includes Jayaprakash, Sampath, Sriman to name a few.
Music isn’t a great plus for this film but cinematography is commendable. Director Thiru who did a good job with his previous film “Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai” has done the same with this film with his racy screenplay. However as his previous film, this film also falters in the end in terms of a brilliant ending.
“Samar” – watchable for the different story, but somehow it doesn’t qualify to be a great film.
