Imtiaz Ali’s latest film “Rockstar” is a conglomeration of love, drama, music, success and comedy. Ranbir Kapoor who plays the male protagonist in the film and A R Rahman who has scored the music are the two stars who have definitely made the difference. Nargis Fakhri who is the female lead is a disappointment considering the scope she had in the character of a Kashmiri girl Heer. The movie though loses plot with the screenplay being an absolute mismatch to the storyline in hand.

Janardhan Jakhar (Ranbir Kapoor) is a middle class Delhi youth who idolizes Jim Morrison and wants to be a rockstar like him. The words of support and encouragement comes in a different form for Janardhan from his friend Khatana (Kumud Mishra) who tells him that to be successful one has to go through a tragedy and that’s been the order of the day for most of the successful artists world over.

Janardhan then meets Heer (Nargis Fakhri) the rich and affluent girl with an attitude at college. At first, Heer ignores him but later befriends him. She invites him for her wedding in Kashmir when she realizes that its not just friendship between them but more than that. She however on the eve of her wedding does not tell him her love instead goes ahead with her marriage and settles in Prague.

Janardhan then has a bumpy ride at home where he is thrown out for a crime he hasn’t committed. On the streets without a place to go, he spends time understanding the realities of life. His talent is spotted by Ustad Jameel Khan (Shammi Kapoor) and he convinces a music company to sign him.

Janardhan then travels to Europe where he tastes success mixed with tragedy as he again meets Heer. In the verge of him becoming a celebrity things take an untoward turn and after that life is not the same for Janardhan and Heer.

Janardhan now has become a famous star nick named Jordan and the struggles and its effect on him is on the latter part of this “Rockstar” which has a running time of 150 minutes.

Ranbir Kapoor has shown myriad expressions and in certain scenes he has truly established himself as an actor. Nargis Fakhri is so unconvincing and unnatural in her acting. For every actor, more than the actions its the expressions that does the trick but for Nargis her eyes simply fail to produce the required feel to the scenes.

Imtiaz Ali has lost the plot in the screenplay wherein the first half rides well with the comic timings and dialogue hogging the limelight. However, in the second half its more than that’s needed spoils the show.

A R Rahman’s songs and music helps the tempo of the film to a great extent but a movie cannot run only on the strength of its music. The substance required for a blockbuster is sorely missed in this “Rockstar”.

“Rockstar” miserably struggles to make an impact.
