Naan Mahaan Alla Movie Review
Karthi Sivakumar riding high after his super-hit “Paiya” has joined hands with director Suseendran of “Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu” fame in this “Naan Mahaan Alla”. A movie with the same title was released way back in 1984 and had Rajnikanth in the lead. However, this present day film has no connection whatsoever with the 1984 film and both films are different and belong to different genres. The makers of this film had to acquire special permission from the producer of the 1984 film K. Balachander for using the same title.
The movie no doubt is fast-paced and entertaining for most part and the positive aspect in the film is that most of the actors barring the hero and heroine are debutants or lesser known actors and all of them have given terrific performance which makes this movie an enjoyable fare. One word of caution though is that the movie has too much of violence and bloodshed which sometimes is hard to digest.
The film revolves around the life of Jeeva (Karthi) who is a freewheeling guy with literally nothing to worry about in life. Jeeva comes across Priya (Kajal Agarwal) and its love at first sight for both of them. Things go pretty smoothly when Jeeva gets the worst possible jolt of his life when his father (Jayaprakash) gets murdered by unknown assailants. Jeeva crestfallen by the loss of his father decides to payback and what follows is a roller-coaster ride of non-stop action which keeps the viewers glued to their seats.
The major strength of the movie is the strong screenplay etched out for an ordinary storyline. In fact, the same storyline has been tested earlier also in various movies by various film makers. However, this time around Suseendran has made sure that there aren’t any goof-ups on the script which has made this “Naan Mahaan Alla” a steady paced action entertainer. The screenplay is so tightly packed that there aren’t any unnecessary comedy, family sentiments or romance sequences.
The movie does not have a single villain who rules the roost, instead they are group of boys who take on the mantle of playing the bad guys. Most of the bad guys here are debutants or lesser known actors and each actor has performed his role with vigor and perfection.
Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is another pillar to the film without which the impact of wouldn’t be as much as it is and special mention to the background score which sets up the pulse of the movie. Editing by Kasi Viswanthan is crisp and the Cinematography by Madhie is perfect in establishing the mood of the film. The movie has a running time of 130 minutes.
Karthi is evolving as a better actor by every film. His performance in his debut film “Paruthiveeran” was so natural and the same can be said of his performance in this film also. Kajal Agarwal after her unsuccessful attempts in establishing herself in Kollywood with “Bommalttam” and “Modhi Vilayadu” has once again played a role which is not of high significance in the context of the movie. The pity is that she comes for less than 15 minutes in the entire film and it would have been a bolder attempt by Suseendran if he had made this film without the character Priya.
“Naan Mahaan Alla” is a film worth watching.
