Marina Movie Review

Director Pandiaraj made giant strides with his first film “Pasanga” which gave him critical acclaim and commercial success. The major advantage “Pasanga” had was that it belonged to the children film genre (Kollywood had a huge gap in this genre for a long time) and had a neat storyline in sync with an apt screenplay. Director Pandiaraj then decided to move into the romance genre when he made “Vamsam” which had a mixed response at the box-office. In his third film “Marina” he has taken the additional mantle of being the producer and with the same genre as that of his debut film and he has once again proved his mettle successfully.

In the titles the first name that gets displayed is that of “Pakkada” Mani followed by the army of child debutants which clearly gives a feeler of how the storyline and the movie is headed. The story is simple which deals with the lives of the small boys who are forced to turn into beach hawkers due to their family situations. There are kids who have different reasons to be at this place and also there is an old man and a affectionate father along with his daughter who have made the Marina their home.

The screenplay for most part of the film has been well etched in a steady pace which revolves around the ordeals these beach hawkers face in their daily lives. The story also has its own share of twists and turns which makes this film with a simple storyline a worthy watch.

There is also a romance track in the film where Senthilnathan (Siva Karthikeyan) and Swapnasundari (Oviya) come as lovers whose lives take a different turn at the Marina. The sequences between the pair though far and few when compared to that of the kids in the film is a laugh-riot. The end sequence of the romance track is ultimate fun.

The movie has a running time of 135 minutes and as a viewer if “Pasanga” has got a thumbs up then this “ Marina” will not disappoint you. The movie does show the hardships of the kids, it could have been more natural if the exploitation on the kids were also shown which could have made this film even more realistic.

In terms of acting, it is as flawless as it can get from the kids. From Siva karthikeyan and Oviya, they have done their required part well. Jayaprakash is roped in to play a miniscule role and it looks like he is the lucky mascot for Pandiaraj. The director’s itch has finally caught up with Pandiaraj also as he makes a one shot appearance in the film.

The lead technical crew members that includes even the music directors have made a memorable debut in this film. The dialogues in the film does stand-out in few places for which special mention needs to be given to Pandiaraj. The movie should do well in the B & C centres.

This “Marina” is another brave and successful venture by Pandiaraj.
