Ko Movie Review
K V Anand’s latest directorial venture “Ko” is a truly refreshing entertainer from the regular run-of-the-mill masala movies. It is refreshing in more ways than one with a story that is simple but at the same time gripping. The supporting screenplay moves the film at a racy pace and most importantly the acting by the lead actors make this film a treat to watch. K V Anand who was once a photographer seems to have taken the inspiration for the main protagonist’s role from his own life experience as the role is flawlessly structured into the scheme of things.
The movie begins with a high voltage chase sequence where Ashwin (Jeeva) a photo journalist with a Tamil daily “Dina Anjal” does the unimaginable and eventually bumps into Renuka Narayanan (Karthika, daughter of yesteryear heroine Radha). Renuka apparently also works for the same daily and is newly transferred from Madurai. There is also an exuberant Saro (Pia Bajpai) who is deeply in love with Ashwin.
Renuka does manage to win over Ashwin’s heart though she knew that Saro is in love with him. When the love triangle goes smoothly there is the other side of the coin where Alavandhan (Kota Srinivasa Rao) who is the leader of the opposition party makes a strong beeline to overtake power from Yogeshwaran (Prakash Raj) the Chief Minister. There is the entry of Vasanthan (Ajmal) who believes in social work and upliftment of the poor through education also floating a party to contest the election.
When the love track and the political track merge together, there is the real twist in the tale which comes from nowhere and post the twist, in the second half of the movie there is so much happening in terms of mounting of scenes and sequences that holds the audience glued to their seats. The twist if revealed will be an absolute spoiler which is not intended here.
In the end, the movie does give a very good feel to the audience that they have witnesses a no-masala clean entertainer in Tamil cinema after a long time.
In terms of acting, Jeeva is brilliant in the role and its high time he chooses subjects that has substance for him to perform. Ajmal after his deft acting in “Anjathey” has grabbed a powerful role and has lived up to expectations. Pia Bajpai is youthful, bubbly and suits her character to perfection. Karthika is a suprise package considering that this is her debut movie in Tamil as she confidently performs in her role be it emotional or romantic scenes. Karthika’s eyes show the will power to succeed and she is sure to go place if she chooses films correctly. Kota Srinivasa Rao and Prakash Raj add more weightage to the film.
The technical team has done a fabulous job in brining the glitz and galmour to the big screen without any compromises. The editing is slick and an important mention should go to Cinematographer Richard M Nathan who has done a commendable job. Music by Harris Jeyaraj is average considering the hits he had rolled out in the past. The placement of the songs in the film is a little to be desired. The movie has a running time of 160 minutes and is sure to be a winner at the box-office.
“Ko” is a must watch entertainer.
