Kites Movie Review

The most awaited film of the year has finally hit the screens and with it the expectations that were sky-rocketing post an impressive trailer has been put to test. In the end if the movie is worth the watch or does it belong to the league of films that don’t live-up to the pre-release hype??? Well, the answer is the film doesn’t sustain the momentum to meet the pre-release hype. Though the movie boasts of an impressive star cast the important element that goes for a toss is the treatment given to the story by director Anurag Basu and Team. The movie which has a running time of 2hrs and 6mins just couldn’t deliver the punch required by the audience.

If one thinks that the trailer has the story in a snapshot then it is not to be. The story begins differently and it essays its journey in a different way. The first half of the film is concentrated completely on establishing the plot to the viewers whereas the latter half lacks the power to finish the plot on a convincing note.

Jai (Hrithik Roshan) lives in Las Vegas doing odd jobs and is loved by Gina (Kangana Ranaut). Jai uninterested in the beginning falls for her money as he discovers that she is the daughter of Bob (Kabir Bedi) who owns one of the biggest casinos in Vegas.

Gina invites Jai to her house for the engagement of her brother Tony (Nicholas Brown) with Natasha (Barbara Mori). Jai falls in love with Natasha and they elope in search of happiness in life. Tony agitated by this decides to hunt them down and that’s where the drama begins.

A small twist in the tale is brought in where Natasha’s past is exposed and surprisingly Jai has also been a part of it. Whether Jai and Natasha gets hunted or as always does true love get to win is shown in the remaining part of the movie.

In terms of acting the honest verdict is that all actors are just mediocre. The music by Rajesh Roshan is soothing to the ears but the real star of the film is cinematographer Ayanka Bose who has captured the beauty of Las Vegas, Nevada and other locations which turns out to be a visual treat to the viewers.

The Story written by Rakesh Roshan is quite different but the choice of the director to direct it is quite a disappointment. Anurag Basu after making brilliant films like “Murder”, “Gangster” and “Life In A Metro” has missed the jackpot by a huge margin this time around.

The most annoying aspect of “Kites” is that there is only 20% dialogue in Hindi the balance 80% is shared between Spanish and English language dialogue which normally doesn’t go well with the masses. The movie is targeted more towards the multiplex crowd and it is doubtful if the non-multiplex  audience will find the storyline interesting.

“Kites” fails miserably to fly even at a lower height.
