Yash Chopra should consider himself as very unfortunate as he couldn’t live this day to see the release of his latest film as he breathed his last just 3 weeks prior to the scheduled release date of his latest masterpiece “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”. In 2004 when he made Veer-Zaara he gave new treatment to a love story with an India-Pakistan connection. In “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” he has taken romance to a new height by sensitively handling the journey of a young man in the streets of London to a reserved army major in the Indian Army.

The storyline goes like this: Samar Anand (Shah Rukh Khan) is an expert in the bomb disposal squad who operates with style in his daily routine. Walks in Akira Rai (Anushka Sharma) a documentary film maker to capture the life of the people of Kashmir. As story would have it, she bumps into Samar and by virtue of it gets to know his life 10 years ago when he was a young man working hard at London and during that time his love interest with a rich and affluent Meera Thapar (Katrina Kaif) who is already engaged to her long time friend.

After the obvious love angle takes shape between Samar and Meera, complications arrive and they are forced to part ways which pushes Samar to take up a job in Army as per his dad’s wishes. Akira, in the present day then convinces Samar to come back to London for a day and what happens when he reaches London and does Meera get to meet Samar in that one day? Does Akira also fall-in for Samar? The answers are in “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” which has a running time of 3 hours.

The film written by Aditya Chopra has been well executed by dad Yash Chopra. At 80 years, he brings in so much freshness into the film. The film doesn’t sway off track at any moment and the pace is steady throughout. The present day aspiring film makers need to learn from this film about how to keep the audience at awe throughout with a simple storyline in hand.

The cinematography by Anil Mehta needs special appreciation as the beautiful locales of Kashmir and London are captured to perfection. Songs by A R Rahman somehow seems to be a disappointment. However, the background score breathes in the needed life the music normally infuses into a film.

Shah Rukh Khan scores well in the role of an Army Major compared to his younger youthful role. Katrina Kaif carries her role as the rich and affluent girl well. Anushka continues to be the exuberant youth in this film also. Anupam Kher, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Sharma play supporting roles in the film.

Overall, the screenplay by Aditya Chopra and Devika Bhagat has done the trick for this film and is sure to be a hit in the box-office race. A fitting swansong to the talented legend Yash Chopra.

“Jab Tak Hai Jaan” interesting and worth the time and money.
