Heroine Movie Review

Madhur Bhandarkar – the man who has a niche for making realistic films has come up with another realistic take on the life of a successful “Heroine” in Bollywood. This film travels through the life of a star Mahi Arora (Kareena Kapoor) and how life treats her when she is at her peak and then the testing journey through various stages of her career.

The film begins with a car scorching to a halt on the roadside and Mahi Arora gets pushed out of it by the other occupant. There one gets to understand that there is something amiss on the life of the star and something serious is to unfold. But then this film is about the other side of stardom and that’s the direction the film heads towards.

For a change this “Heroine” doesn’t traverse across the struggle of the typical aspiring model to star status. Instead, the stage is set where the star is about to experience the struggles of stardom. There are various scenes which typically expose the people around a star who sometimes try to make or break a career and it gets no different in Mahi’s case. On the flip side, there is her affair with a leading actor in Aryan (Arjun Rampal) then with cricketer Angad (Randeep Hooda) irony being neither of them going the full distance.

Next is to what competition can bring to an individual, followed by the situation when actor’s block strikes on Mahi’s life, what decision she takes and finally the self-actualization stage where Mahi comes to a realize that life is beyond stardom, success and glamour.

The best part of this “Heroine” is that there is so much reality in this film, unfortunately due to the typical absence of a scorching pace; it misses the mark to qualify for a typical masala Bollywood flick. The film does have masala elements like item numbers from the leading lady, more than enough show of cleavage and few steamy bedroom scenes. But, the typical movie goer does get a feeling that the movie doesn’t hold enough steam.

Madhur Bhandarkar has really pulled this one out like a feather out of his hat. He has made a clear decision of what needs to be in the film and what needn’t be. The pace is a bit slow but the crux of the film goes steady without any scope for dilution.

In terms of acting, Kareena Kapoor has proved the versatility that she carries. Arjun Rampal, Randeep Hooda doesn’t have the scope to perform but within the given boundaries, they have performed well. Sahana Goswami in the role of  Promita (Bengali actress) has given in a mature performance especially in the scene where she bids adieu to Kareena. Ranvir Shorey as the award winning director carries a good body language along with his performance.

Mugdha Godse looks like she is still in the “Fashion” mould as she doesn’t make a mark in this film. The other actors include Divya Dutta, Helen, Shillpi Sharma, Lillete Dubey and Rakesh Bapat have given the required performance.

“Heroine” made at a cost of 32 crores has a running time of 150 minutes and could be a mixed-bag at the box-office. The film would do good business with the multiplex crowd but in the B & C centres, its fortunes are very dicey.

Music by Salim-Sulaiman does scores heavily especially in the title song and “Halkat Jawani”. Editing by Deven Murudeshwar could have been a little more crisper but knowing Madhur’s style of film making, the pace is slow with more emphasis on scenes than pace.

The film is definitely worth the watch. But, if one is to go for this “Heroine” expecting it to be a typical masala flick, then they are sure to be disappointed.

“Heroine” is a well-made realistic film.
