Billa 2 Movie Review

“Billa 2” is a sequel which turns out to be a prequel to the 2007 Vishnuvardhan directed “Billa”. Though the director’s baton might have changed hands between the two editions, this edition of “Billa” traces back to the evolution of an ordinary refugee named David Billa (Ajith kumar) playing his trump cards wisely and transforming himself into a powerful Don “Billa”.

The film begins with David Billa’s entry into Rameswaram as a refugee. There he gets tangled in a vicious web and to make things better for him, unknowingly he does the illegal business which plants the seed of transformation in Billa’s life.

When things go smoothly in his new business, his family comes in the way where he has to care-take his deceased sister’s daughter Jasmine (Parvathy Omanakuttan). On the other hand there are the bad guys in Dimitri (Vidyut Jamwal) and Abbasi (Sudhanshu Pandey) who fall into the category of friends becoming foe.

The story is all about how Billa overcomes the bad guys and hurdles stacked in front of him and to add more spice to his life he even wins over Abbasi’s girl friend Sameera’s (Bruna Abdullah) heart .

Though in paper the film looks exciting, on screen it turns out to be a huge disappointment. The film is technically a well-made film but in terms of the screenplay, it is a huge disaster to say the least. To make matters worse, director Chakri Toleti’s choice of heroines in Parvathy Omanakuttan and Bruna Abdullah are total mis-fits as both the girls lack the persona that Nayanthara and Namitha had in “Billa”.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music can’t get any bad than this. None of the songs tuned by him lingers in the mind once the film is over. And apart from the Billa theme music, the background score is just mediocre stuff.

Ajith Kumar’s acting looks monotonous throughout the film which could have been avoided. There are supporting actors like Manoj K Jayan, Rahman, Ilavarasu, Sriman and others who don’t add much value to the film.

“Billa 2” isn’t a lengthy film by any standards as it has a running time of 120 minutes and for the die-hard Ajith’s fans, this eagerly awaited film turns out to be an unexpected dampener. The film which took almost a year to complete has had a fantastic opening worldwide thanks to the 2000+ theatres releasing it but on the whole it is sure to bite the dust at box-office.

The first half of the film actually sets up a good platform for a racy second half. Unfortunately since the director had given more emphasis on the action sequences, the thrust on the story in the second half goes for a toss which tanks this “Billa 2”.

“Billa 2” an eagerly awaited prequel gone all wrong.

There was no story at all. What are you saying? Tell me the full plot then. DO you know the time limit it took for BIlla to become a don? Can you tell me Billa’s actual relationships in the film? Do you remember a single suspenseful or thriller scene in the film?

The movie was terrible. Huge disappointment and not a single person in the theaters here in Canada liked the film. Ajith is of course an outstanding actor. Chakri is a flop.
