“Attakathi” (Cardboard Knife) has earned a hype to it due to the fact that actor Surya’s production house Studio Green has bagged the film’s distribution rights. Added to it was the publicity overdrive in the last few days that has made this “Attakathi” a one to watch out for. Director Ranjith who has taken a very light subject to deal with in his debut film much similar to his mentor Venkat Prabhu.

The film doesn’t have a complex story to boast off nor is the storyline something new. The film scores its maximum in the screenplay and in terms of acting from its lead actors Dinesh and Swetha. Touted to be a realistic film, it is a clear flow of events without any unexpected twists or turns. The climax though predictable keeps the viewers at the edge of their seats till the end.

Most film makers these days resort to the “realistic film” category, thereby venturing into dirt laden roads, atmosphere etc. In Attakathi, the director has dealt with the mindset of youths living in smaller towns to perfection. The sets and the props used in the film inhales more life into the film.

Dhinakaran (Dinesh) is a student still finding it hard to clear his 12th Standard exams and on the other hand there is Poornima (Swetha) a school student. Dinesh does all the so called youth stunts to attract her. When the love seems to be all set, Dinesh gets a jolt from Poornima which makes him a different individual.

After two years, Dinesh in his college again gets to meet Poornima and what happens from there is dealt in the remaining part of the film. The ending is predictable for the reason that the title strongly sends a message that the hero is a fit for nothing case and in the first half, the heroine says something to the hero which further confirms the ending.

The movie though not of express pace, does move at a decent pace. It’s just that there were too many movies in the same genre that were released recently and hence this film doesn’t bring in any surprise to the viewer . “Attakathi” has a running time of 130 minutes and to be honest it qualifies for a decent time pass movie.

Music by Santosh Narayanan sounds good to the ears and hence the background score syncs well with the mood of the film. Cinematography by Promodh Verma captures the rustic locales well. The movie should experience a more than decent run in its first week at the box-office.

Overall, with a clean screenplay this “Attakathi” being true to its title is not being sharp enough to cause any major impact but turns out to be a watchable entertainer.
