Asal Movie Review

Ajith and Saran after a spate of successful films together like “Kadhal Mannan”, “Amarkkalam” and “Attagasam” have joined hands once again for this “Asal” (meaning original). The movie created a lot of expectations and along with the pre-release hype added more vigor to the eager fans of Ajith who were waiting for an ultimate treat from their “Thala”. Ajith Kumar who had shed the Ultimate Star tag with this movie has treaded into new areas like being the co-director of the movie and being a part of the team that was responsible for the story, screenplay and dialogue with the company of Yuhi Sethu and Saran.

The movie begins with the introduction of Jeevanantham (Ajith in an elderly role) who is an arms dealer supplying to the government. He has his sons Sam (Sampath), Vicky (Rajeev Krishna) and Shiva (Ajith). Sam and Vicky are dead against Shiva courtesy a family issue and due to this fact all three are always at loggerheads. Sam and Vicky decide to strike a deal with an illegal arms supplier which do not get the nod of Jeevanantham. Lured by big money they decide to go against their dad’s wish and cross swords with a Mumbai based gangster Shetty (Kelly Dorjee).

Trouble brews when Shetty comes to know of their plans and kidnap Vicky and that’s when the supposed action takes full swing. What happens to Vicky, Sam and Shiva and how everything concludes is being told in a very shabby manner in this 135 mins long Asal. It is long because the movie never sets a tone for the audience and right from the first few minutes of the movie the boredom starts and it remains till the end except for the comedy sequences by Don Samsa (Yuhi Sethu) which come across as a huge relief.

Sara (Sameera Reddy) who works with French Embassy and at the same time spends most of her time with Shiva has nothing great to offer in the role that has been assigned to her. The only thing that she does is in the song sequences where she shows lot of skin. Prabhu in the role of Mirasi is more on a special appearance category as he comes for few scenes then vanishes suddenly and comes again in the end. Sulabha (Bhavana) as the girl who helps Prabhu is totally an unwanted character in the movie.

Sampath who was once a dreaded villain in “Saroja” is slowly loosing the sting in his acting. Rajeev Krishna’s acting is not worth mentioning. Music by Bharadwaj is a huge disaster. Story and screenplay are totally meaningless and one wonders how could Ajith knowing the pulse of his fans could be a part of this tragedy. Saran as director of the movie has failed miserably in providing an entertainer to the audience.

“Asal” a complete disaster in the offing.
