“Why this kolaveri di” took the internet by storm when the single track was viewed more than 20 million times within a month of its release. This unexpected popularity of the track helped the brand “3” to market itself well. Danush’s pair in Shruti Hassan was initially to do the role had to be replaced by Amala Paul then due to non-availability of Danush’s dates and Shruti’s Telugu film getting postponed, she made it back to the team.

Aishwarya Danush who forays into direction with this film has titled this film “3” with a specific reason that the entire film revolves around three characters. If one is to go by the posters then the common thought would be that Siva Karthikeyan would be the 3rd cog in the wheel. But, the 3rd character happens to be Sunder Ramu (who played Danush’s friend in “Mayakkam Enna”).

The movie does begin with a tragedy but then the flow of the film takes the viewers into the flashback mode where the love story between Ram (Danush) and Janani (Shruti Hassan) gets established. Its then the normal candy floss romance for the first half of the film which runs for 80 minutes. But in the first half itself the major suspense in the story is let loose. Its in the first half that Siva Karthikeyan who comes as Danush’s friend plays a comic cameo role.

Post Interval, the movie tends to completely loose its direction wavering off track way too much that even Danush’s brilliant acting couldn’t bring it back on track. The idea behind the main crux of the storyline looks genuine but it could have been portrayed in a more interesting manner. As a producer Danush can be generous to okay such a script but as a viewer all one gets is utter disappointment.

The major highlights of the film are Danush’s meaningful acting, Anirudh’s background score and Shruti Hassan’s subtle emotional acting. Apart from these three the major spoilers or let downs are story, screenplay and editing. Kola Bhaskar’s editing lets lot of scenes to drag much beyond the required limit. On the whole the movie which has a running time of 145 minutes is a definite let down.

Prabhu, Bhanupriya and Rohini have played important character roles in the film. Songs by Anirudh which are already chartbusters have been well Shot. The Kolaveri song desn’t have the effect it was supposed to have considering the hype around it. Aishwarya Danush should learn the tricks of the trade pretty fast if she wants to establish herself as a director with substance. The box office prospects of this “3” looks pretty dull to say the least.

“3” fails badly to meet expectations.
